Community Outreach What KCPT does to enrich our community
Youth Education
- Artists in the Schools: Early Childhood - Teaching artists
conduct theater classes at the Grant Street Elementary School/
Port Townsend Individualized Choice Educational (I.C.E)./Crescent
School District. Self expression and literacy skills are
emphasized through improvisation, storytelling and reading aloud
for an audience.
- Theatre Adventure Club/ Summer Theatre Camps: Ages 5 – 18
years - Three weeks of Summer Theater Camps are offered to all
school-age students in our community. Teaching artists provide
classes in movement and dance, music and voice, improvisation,
and play creation. 60% of 2009 participants received
scholarships to cover all or a portion of the tuition.
- TeenLab: Ages 13 – 18 years - TeenLab program provides local
teens an opportunity to perform a play written by and about
their generation while learning more about the craft of acting
and theater production. Three performances result at KCPT’s
playhouse with the collaboration of students from JCS, I.C.E,
Port Townsend School District (PTSD) and Olympic Peninsula Home
Connections (OPHC).
- High School Internships: 7th – 12th grade - Internships
provide opportunities for arts credit to Jefferson Community
School (JCS) and I.C.E students who are involved in the work of
producing plays either as performers or in offstage supporting
roles.
- Scholarships: High School Seniors - Local high school
graduates receive scholarships supporting a college or
conservatory education in pursuit of a career in drama. Nine
students over the last five years have received support from
KCPT. One KCPT scholarship winner graduated from her program
last year and is now employed in New York by a professional
acting ensemble. Three other scholarship awardees are slated to
finish their programs within the next year.
- Apprenticeships: Post-Secondary - KCPT provides internships
and apprenticeships for college students and graduates to gain
professional experience, expand personal and occupational
networking, and begin mastering their craft in a facilitated,
mentored environment. This expedites the difficult, and
sometimes slow, process of becoming a theatre arts professional.
