Key City Public Theatre has extended the run of Gip
Hoppe’s wicked musical satire “Boyce and Melinda Peterson’s Investment
Strategies for the Post-Money World.” The show will run two additional weekends
at Key City Playhouse through September 12, with curtain times Fridays and
Saturdays at 8:00 p.m., and Sundays at 7:00 p.m.
Boyce and Melinda Peterson (David Wayne Johnson and Denise Fleener) are the
ultimate self-promoting financial experts who have come to Port Townsend in the
year 2020 to explain the decade-long economic slump — and to restore the
American way of life by offering us “Unlimited Wealth for Life!”

A get-rich financial seminar — with songs?
Key City Public Theatre presents the west coast premiere of Gip
Hoppe’s new musical satire “Boyce and Melinda Peterson’s
Investment Strategies for the Post-Money World” at Key City
Playhouse on Friday, August 13, with performances running
through Sunday, August 29.
Local theatre-goers will remember KCPT’s 2006 production of
Hoppe’s wicked political comedy “A New War.” (See
AfterWords photo.) Once
again, the playwright takes inspiration from the latest
headlines, as his new financial seminar musical finds humor in
America’s economic downturn. “Boyce and Melinda...” features
book and lyrics by Hoppe, music by Chandler Travis, and is
directed by Denise Winter.
It is the year 2020, the twelfth year of our country’s financial
misery. Gas is $45 a gallon. Congress has disbanded. President
Sarah Palin is seen only occasionally on fuzzy internet videos
speaking in tongues. But take heart! The ultimate financial
experts Boyce and Melinda Peterson (David Wayne Johnson and
Denise Fleener) are coming to Port Townsend offering us hope —
offering us the restoration of the American way of life —
offering us “Unlimited Wealth for Life!”
And
they burst into song! The lively musical numbers parody
everything from country ballads (“The Best Things in Life Ain’t
Free”) to sexy funk (“Stimulus Package”) to acid rock (“Toxic
Assets”) — with a rousing patriotic finale that would make Bruce
Springsteen proud.
Parents may note the show is rated PG-13 for strong comic language
and sexual innuendo.
Hoppe was in Germany directing another of his musical spoofs
when the stock market crashed in 2008, so he had the unusual
perspective of watching the economic meltdown from outside the
United States. Asked to write a show for Payomet Performing Arts
Center in Massachusetts, Hoppe steeped himself in all the inane
television explanations of the economic meltdown so he could
offer his own spin on the issues — coming up with a send-up of a
typical hotel-ballroom-style investment seminar. The playwright
will be attending the opening weekend performances.
David Wayne Johnson (Boyce Peterson) has appeared in KCPT’s
“Birnham Woods,” the 2008 “Shakespeare in the Park” production
of “As You Like It,” and “Tartuffe” in the 2007 season.
Denise Fleener (Melinda Peterson), who most recently directed
KCPT’s production of “Scrooge: The Musical” last December, has
appeared in 2009’s “What the Butler Saw,” and in “Where’s My
Money?” and “Working: The Musical” from the 2008 season.
Key
City Playhouse is located at 419 Washington St. in Port
