Five former board members were recently honored by Key City
Players for their outstanding service to Port Townsend’s
community theatre organization.
The occasion was Key City Players’ annual volunteer appreciation
party on June 10, which was attended by more than 50 volunteers,
all eager to applaud honorees DJ Adams, Marj Iruo, Catherine
McNabb, Kathie Meyer, and Harriet Stay.
KCP Artistic Director Denise Winter presented engraved pens as
tokens of esteem and cited the accomplishments and continued
volunteer commitments of each former board member.
DJ Adams stepped down from the board to put more time
into productions. Adams has directed mainstage shows and
one-acts in each of the past three Playwrights’ Festivals and is
planning to expand her talents as a theatre technician, designer
and director. She’ll also continue to draw new talent to the
stage. “DJ is the ‘new actor’s’ director,” Winter said.
Additionally, Adams is the technical liason for outside groups
who wish to rent the Key City Playhouse.
Marj Iuro has played the roles of board member,
actress/singer, director, and backstage as well as
front-of-house staff. She has retired from the board but will
stay on KCP’s scholarship committee, “because she’s a teacher
and education is her passion,” said Winter. Iuro will also
continue volunteering as one of KCP’s trained house managers.
Catherine McNabb is the current program administrator for
PT Shorts, KCP’s monthly reading series, and has secured her
place in KCP history as the co-creator of the Golden Age Radio
Christmas show. She now moves from the board to the capital
campaign committee. McNabb is using her grantwriting skills to
approach major arts funders for the Theatre on the Move!
campaign to build a new theatre in uptown. “She’s going to be a
really critical component to the success of our capital
campaign,” said Winter.
Kathie Meyer resigned her board position when she became
arts editor for the Port Townsend-Jefferson County Leader. She
has appeared onstage and worked backstage on various KCP
productions. “Kathie also helped us take our publicity materials
to the next level last year,” reported Winter. “That was a big
leap.” She will continue to research grant opportunities for the
capital campaign.
During
Harriet Stay’s long tenure with Key City Players, she has
served as vice president of the board, volunteer coordinator,
box office manager, “prop wizard” and “general all-around
theatre mom,” according to Winter. Now that’s she’s freed up
from board duties, Stay’s deep involvement continues with her
role as production manager for the upcoming musical
The Spitfire Grill.
New Key City Players board members elected in May to 2-year
terms are Jay Page, Art Reitsch, and David Wayne Johnson
(Vice President). They join veteran board members Ian Keith
(President), Lee Wolodkewitsch (Treasurer), Deborah Hammond
(Secretary), W.R. Allyn, David Hundhausen, Ginger McNew and
David Parris.
Many thanks to Bread & Roses and Subway, the business sponsors
of the KCP volunteer appreciation party. Thanks also to Lawrason
Driscoll, Deborah Hammond, Ginger McNew, Lee Wolodkewitsch,
Thelma and David Parris, Jan North and Ian Keith for event
assistance, and to Kristin and Otto Smith and Doug Daniels for
providing musical entertainment.
